IQ02-12: Measuring success of ecommerce web sites using Delone and McLean model: An empirical study. with P. B. Lowry and L. Al-Mutairi [I am the principal investigator]. (From 02rd July 2012 to 03nd July 2013)

Abstract: E-commerce is one of the Internet application that has been widely deployed by businesses. However, ensuring the success of e-commerce web site is still one of the biggest challenges management can face. In an attempt to determine a comprehensive model that can be used to assess e-commerce success, this study tested the updated IS success model of DeLone and McLean (2003) including the modifications and enhancement proposed by Wang (2008) in the context of e-commerce in an Arab country. The model will comprise six variables: information quality, system quality, service quality, perceived value, customer's satisfaction, and intention to reuse. This study will also develop appropriate items/ measure to fit the unique features of ecommerce as well as to improve the model proposed by Wang (2008). The proposed research model will be tested using a selected sample of online shoppers who have previous experience with e-shopping. The study will use structural equation modeling PLS tool to analyze collected data. This study is expected to be relevant for both practice and research

IQ02/10: Factors influencing the intention to use e-government services among citizens in the State of Kuwait (From 01st  September 2012 to 31st August 2013). I am c-investigator with Dr Hasan Abbas.

Project summary: Although information technology (IT) is developing into an exponential growth, Kuwaiti government still lacks to follow-up in same path. There are two possible issues here: One the lack of strategic view with top decision makers at governmental levels, levels of ministers and their supporters. Second, there is lack of enough technological culture at the base. It is very possible that Kuwaiti people and other sectors in the society do not use facilities of Kuwaiti government portal. This research’s goal gives close attention to the second issue. This research project aims to focus on whether Kuwaiti society is technologically enabled and educated enough to take advantage of services facilitated through IT. In more detailed, the main goal here is to highlight the important factors that affect the actual usage of e-government services by the Kuwaiti society.  Precisely, we studied the usage of Kuwait eGov portal and found that trust has only one significant association with the perceived ease of use whereas all of the associations for quality are found to be significant.

IQ 03/10: Understanding undergraduate students’ intentions to not choosing  information systems major (From 23rd June 2010 to 22nd June 2011). I am the ONLY investigator

Project summary: Selecting a college major represents a major life decision requiring extensive decision-making over a period of time, especially considering the commitment of time and resources. This is a heavy and risky decision which may engage and corrupt/alter the future of undergraduate students. However, undergraduate students commonly articulate knowing other students who chose their academic major for less-than-rational reasons. In fact, some of these students even admit that this phenomenon describes their own decision-making process. This study aims to study. Per opposite to previous studies which focused on understanding what attract college undergraduates to choose IT and MIS as their major; the current study has two primary objectives. The first is to understand factors that deter college undergraduates from choosing IT/ MIS as their major. The second is to extend the literature on student career choice from an Arab and least developed perspective, and shed light on reasons that lead student to select other majors instead of MIS. In addition, the study seeks to investigate the role of cultural factors represented by the effect of gender on perceived obstacles by students, and level of computer literacy toward not selecting the MIS major

KFAS (2010-140701): Assessment of RFID technology to improve the state subsidies for Livestock feed at Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources-(From 01st February 2011 to 01st September 2011 with Abdulaziz Al Ateeqi [I am the principal investigator]-[ تقييم تطبيق تكنولوجيا شرائح التّعريف اللاسلكية بالهويةفي ضبط سياسة دعم الأعلاف الحيوانية بالهيئة العامة لشئون الزراعة والثروة الحيوانية]

Project summary: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an effective automatic identification technology for a variety of objects including natural, manufactured and handmade artifacts; mobile services, humans, animals and other species. While expected benefits have been seen as one of the main drivers of RFID adoption, there is little understanding of what benefits should be considered when exploring RFID adoption in a public institution. Unlike previous studies, this project draws on the RFID technology to investigate its impacts on animal identification and to control states subsidies for animal breeders. This case study presents the application of RFID for tracking and monitoring livestock in Kuwait and discusses its potential benefits by the Public Authority of Agriculture affairs and Fish resources

IQ01-10: An examination of the impact of perceived trust on intention to use electronic payment during online shopping context (From 23rd May 2010 to 22nd May 2010 with Dr Hasan Abbas [I am the principal investigator]

Project summary: With significant increase in the number of Internet users in the world and the Arab region, statistics show a steady increase in the total volume of worldwide e-commerce and low volume at the Arab level. Low level of payment acceptance and lack of trust perceptions are among the advocated reasons. This study aims to investigate the role of perceived trust on the intention to use electronic payment means during e-shopping in the State of Kuwait. The main objectives of the study consist to identify which electronic payment methods is the most used, to develop a model for e-payment adoption that includes other variables, and to identify the trends of users to use and identify the most important drivers toward the adoption. In addition, the study seeks to investigate the role of cultural factors represented by the effect of gender (male vs. female) and educational background (students vs. non-students), and level of computer literacy toward the use of electronic payment. Finally the study targets to investigate barriers and obstacles to shopping using means of electronic payment.

KFAS (2009-1103-03): Evaluation of Business intelligence Applications to link business to strategic decision making Kuwaiti Perspectives from Kuwaiti environment (from 1st  September 2010 to 31st  May  2011). This project is sponsored by Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS). I am the principal investigator and the only one in this project

Project summary: Strategic Environmental Scanning is a modern approach that was originated from the strategic management publications. It aims to ensure the ongoing success of organizations in highly competitive environments. Strategic environmental scanning is described as the informational process through which a company keeps itself aware of opportunities and anticipates threats which occur in its socio-economic environment. This study aims to achieve the following objectives: (i) Analyze and classify the literature review about Strategic environmental scanning which will be helpful and relevant for potential researchers. (ii) Evaluate the application of the strategic environmental scanning process developed by HUMBERT LESCA by a sample of Kuwaiti organizations. (iii) Assess the awareness, the strategic importance, and the types of information used by a sample of Kuwaiti executives. (iv) Assess the organization’s readiness to adopt strategic environmental scanning in term of information collection, analysis and use of strategic information in order to support strategic decision making. (v) Test existence of potential correlation between strategic environmental scanning and some organizational factors, and personal characteristics (e.g. level management, department, size of the organization, and number of people involved in strategic environmental scanning, etc.), as was found by some studies outside the Arab world. (vi) Help and ease the process of strategic environmental scanning adoption and executives’ awareness in Kuwaiti organizations. (vii) Propose recommendations in order to increase the effectiveness of strategic environmental scanning, and the use of strategic information by Kuwaiti organizations.

IQ 03-07: An empirical study of requirements engineering assessment: A field study in Kuwaiti organizations (from 30/09/2007 to 30/09/2008) - دراسة تقيمية لهندسة المتطلبات : دراسة ميدانيةعلى الشركات الكوتيية -. This project is sponsored by Kuwait University, with Dr Hasan Abbas [I am the principal investigator].

Summary: Many studies in the Arab world focused on issues related to information systems/information technology acceptance, adoption, and satisfaction. While these studies are useful is shedding light on management and technology issues (post implementation), little is known about system development (pre implementation) practices in Arab and Kuwaiti organizations.  Specifically, this study will examine one of the most important phases of system development: Requirements gathering. This study is one of rare projects that approach such issue. Question of interest to, in this research, is related to the type of known elicitation methods, the most used ones in system development, and the one that derives the most value for its users. This project aims to shed light on the issue through an exploratory study, to assess the current practices in order to point to improvements for Kuwaiti organizations, and to provide guidelines for information system course improvements at the College of Business Administration.

IQ 01-07: Investigation of intention to use mobile phone for e-payment based on M-Net technology in Kuwait (from 15st May 2007 to 15st May 2008). " دراسة العوامل التي تحدد نية استخدام الهواتف المحمولة كوسائل للدفع الالكتروني باستخدام تكنولوحيا أم نت في الكويت " This project is sponsored by Kuwait University. I am the principal investigator and the only one in this project.

Summary: With the high penetration of mobile device adoption, a recent technology emerged and started to gain popularity in developed countries. It is an alternative payment to existing traditional payment systems, which is delivered over mobile devices (ATM, credit card, cash and checks). While this technology has started to get polarity in Japan and Europe, little is known about its acceptance in the Arab world. M-net is a new mobile payment system launched recently in Kuwait. In order to study the acceptance of this technology, this research project aims to investigate the role and the importance played by some factors including trust, familiarity, structural assurance, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and social pressure on intention to use the M-net technology. The research project also aims to identify similarities and differences of mobile payment in Kuwait compare to others studies that took place outside the Arab world, as well as to generate a recent state of the art on the subject. Besides identification of its fit in the Arab culture, the study also aims to propose suggestions on how to increase its usage in Kuwait.

IQ06/05: Investigation of determinants of Camera Mobile Phone Adoption in the State of Kuwait using Structural Equation Modeling - دراسة العوامل  التي تحدد إستخدامات كاميرا موبايل في دولة الكويت باستخدام نمودج معادلات آنيwith Dr Hasan Abbas ator]

Summary: Traditionally, information technology affected various businesses and industrial sectors. Nowadays, the technology is becoming a must to the individuals and to practice their day to day life. Hence, the technology becomes a (semi) mandatory instrument to facilitate our tasks. Therefore, the technology is involved in our public and private life such as mobile phone, camera mobile phone, instant messaging, product digital assistant (PDA), pen based, etc. Among these technologies, Camera Mobile Phone is one the emerging technology that shapes and affects our daily life and has violate individual’ privacy. Its miss-use has led to a contradictory debate in Arab countries in general and in Kuwait particularly. This debate has manifested itself in daily news papers articles. This research aims to shed light on the subject. The purpose is investigating the most determinant factors that lead to its adoption and diffusion in Kuwait as well as its actual usage. To bring this objective to its end, the research will apply the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This is a very well known and robust model in the information system and information technology field. Besides applying the TAM, the research also aims to identify similarities and differences of the TAM application in Kuwait compare to others places (western societies), as well as to generate a recent state of the art on the subject in Kuwait as well as in the Arab world.

IQ 01/05: Investigation of the Instant Messaging Technology acceptance and its impact on CBA students: a field study (from 1st June 2005 to 1st June 2006). This project is sponsored by Kuwait University. I am the principal investigator and the only one in this project.

Project summary: This study aims to study the effect of new internet communication technologies (chat programs and instant messaging) through the following research questions: (a) What is the current state of chat technology use on a sample of Kuwaiti students as well as on employees in some Kuwaiti organizations? (b) Are there any relationships between chat technology use and student (employees) performance? The study aims to develop a model for chat and instant messaging adoption in Kuwait. The envisioned model is expected to link exogenous (independent) variables (individual difference, skills of using computers, motivation, social influence, etc.,) to endogenous variables (student/employee performance, diversity of use, frequency of use, etc.). The study has several benefits. First, result of the study (the constructed model) will be helpful for education purposes. Second the study aims to propose suggestions to increase benefits and performance from using the internet communication technologies both among students and employees. Third, result of the study will be used to improve content of some information system courses at the college of business administration school. Fourth, in addition to previous benefits, the study aims to enrich Arabic literature since few papers are currently available on the subject. To achieve these objectives, the study proposes to use a research methodology that combines a literature search/review, field study based an questionnaire/ interview development, as well as well model building based on Structural Equation Modeling.

IQ 02/02: Towards the awareness of the use of strategic information by Kuwaiti executives" Funded by Kuwait University

English research Abstract: Environmental scanning is a process of monitoring the external environment and collecting information of strategic importance for use in making organisational decisions. Even though, the area of environmental scanning has received a lot of attention in the well-developed countries; there is a scarcity of knowledge about how LDC (Less Developed Countries) organisations and their executive operate. To fill in this gap, this research will use an exploratory survey-based questionnaire to investigate the subject in a sample of Kuwaiti organisations. It will examine whether these organisations are familiar with and practice the concept of environmental scanning, what are the alternative concepts used to refer to environmental scanning, what kind of information receive more attention from executives’ point of view, what are the problems they are facing, and what are the company’ characteristics facing such problems. Expected results of this study will have implications for both research and practice. From a practical perspective, this research will identify requirements of Kuwaiti executives with regard to environmental scanning assimilation, and how they could be more competitive. Results of the project are expected to convince Kuwaiti managers about the use of strategic information. From a research perspective, this research will highlight new findings about how companies from a LDC practices environmental scanning, and how this practice is different from that of a well-developed country.
